LISSY Registration Process

Access Eligibility

LIS is required to control access to the LIS and LWS microdata due to data access restrictions in most participating countries:

1. Use of the microdata is for scholarly, research or educational purposes only.

2. Use of the microdata for commercial purposes is never permitted.

3. Users’ eligibility varies according to their status:

  • All students in any country in the world and all LIS/LWS data providers automatically qualify for free and unlimited access to the LIS/LWS microdata.
  • All eligible researchers who come from financially contributing countries or contributing institutions are granted unlimited access to the microdata at no additional cost.
  • Some users might be subject to an individual user fee. Note that this user fee depends upon the income classification of the country of
residence. Check the  World Bank Country Income classification.

From 2018 through 2023, individual fees for eligible researchers from non-contributing middle- and low-income countries may be covered by third-party funding raised by LIS.

From 2020 through 2024, all staff of the United Nations Organisation (including funds, programmes and other institutions that are part of the UN system, with the exception of the specialised agencies) will have unlimited access to the LIS data, covered by generous contribution from the Department of Cooperation of the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Registration and Renewal

Prior to accessing LISSY, eligible users must complete the online LIS Microdata User Registration application. After examination of the application, approved applicants will receive a user ID and password via email.

Access to LISSY is granted for one calendar year. It must be renewed by 01 January in order to keep working with the LIS databases.

  Warnings

  • Do not register twice with LISSY even though, for instance, you have moved to another institution. When your LISSY access expires, use the opportunity of the renewal process to update
    your personal information.
  • If you need to change your registered email address(es), please send an email to admin@lisdatacenter.org.
